Product Development

In collaboration with The King’s Trust (formerly The Prince’s Trust), I developed and delivered two programs - Get Started with Apps and Get Into Freelance - both aimed at helping young individuals aged 11 to 35 who are not engaged in education, training, or employment, into careers in technology. This initiative was supported by prominent sponsors, including Capgemini, Barclays and HSBC, ensuring the course was offered free of charge to participants.

Roles:
iOS + Web Development, Learning Experience Designer, Project Lead, Researcher

Over a decade, the courses successfully reached nearly 2000 young people, receiving acclaim for their accessibility, fun engaging content, and positive impact on students. Attendees often have varied learning needs, with neurodivergence being prominent amongst participants. I designed these courses to be practical, fast-moving and as hands-on as possible to keep attention, with a flexible approach to modules, so as to not discourage students who may have disabilities that make it harder to get involved in some areas. The success of these programs led to my role as a national provider, where I had the privilege of teaching coding to young people across the UK.

Get Started with Apps guides small teams of young people through the end-to-end process of app development—from conceptualisation and design to development and prototyping. Participants worked collaboratively to transform their app ideas into tangible prototypes, gaining hands-on experience in technology and project management.

Get Into Freelance is a two-month program that accommodates approximately 16 participants per cohort and covers skill development. Including training in web development and design - focusing on building small websites, client acquisition - guidance on sourcing and managing clients, interview preparation with Barclays, contract management, education on creating and managing freelance contracts and finally portfolio building - assistance in developing a professional portfolio through hands-on projects.

These programs remain my favourite courses to teach - as they’re filled with games and innovative ways to learn and are always high-energy. It’s amazing to see the positive impact on students and the rewarding experience of helping young people achieve things they didn’t think possible.
