Learning Design

Ravensbourne is renowned for its strong links to industry. From day one, students build connections with practitioners and work on real-life projects with recognised brands. Here, I was responsible for developing and facilitating a program focused on creating cross-platform apps to undergraduate students enrolled in technical courses.

Roles:
Lecturer, Learning experience designer, Developer

I designed this course to provide students with the practical skills required to build functional, real-world applications using a variety of technologies. To teach in the most engaging way, I chose project-based learning here. Students were tasked with building the following apps:

Pic: An app (not like Instagram at all…) that allowed users to take and store pictures, introducing students to mobile device capabilities and basic user interface design.

Scratch: An app that taught students how to integrate databases into their apps, enabling them to store and retrieve data—an essential skill for building scalable applications.

I facilitated this hands-on program, where students learned not only how to develop these apps but also the critical aspects of debugging, testing, and improving their designs.

The course was successful in providing students with the foundational knowledge and skills needed for app development across multiple platforms. They walked away with a deeper understanding of both app functionality and database management, preparing them for future roles in app development or further studies in the field.
